Walk in their shoes.

More info on story here!

As I was browsing on The New York Times website I came across an article that outlined one of the most controversial issues in politics today - same sex marriage.  For a long time same sex marriage has been an issue that has divided Americans.  The questions "Is it moral or immoral?" and "What rights should same sex couples have?" are among the many things that come to mind when people think about this issue.

Personally I don't believe in same sex marriage the same way I don't believe in things like divorce (personal reasons), BUT I don't impose my thoughts on others and I believe that people should be able to do whatever they want to do with their lives in this day and age.  With that being said I have lots of homosexual friends that have allowed me to understand why they made their decisions and if they've ever had any regrets giving me the chance to see things through their eyes and attempt to understand their reasoning.

With this being said I think this is the one thing that many Americans fail to do: step into another person's shoes and try to understand them.  Where I live, in the south, many people have never met a homosexual person leading to them making assumptions off of stereotypes that they have developed through media.  I find that it is a lot easier to make an assumption about a type of person if you don't know anyone that falls into that category.  In my opinion this will hold Americans back from being more open minded and accepting of those who are "different".

All in all, this is just one hot button issue out of hundreds that are dividing Americans and I believe that this (along with many others) can be fixed with Americans trying to understand the ones that they constantly criticize.

Happy Presidents Day!!

What's Up With Wisconsin?

Original Article Here

There are tons of protests happening around the world right now......you can add Wisconsin to that list.  Recently the Wisconsin government has announced plans to cut funding and possibly laying off 1500 state employees.  Currently the average state employee for Wisconsin makes $48,348....annually, so the last thing these workers need is to be laid off (making a bad situation even worse).  This sounds like the typical "government cuts jobs and funds, citizens just let it happen" type of story, but its far from the truth.

The state workers are peacefully fighting back until they get what they want.  Unfortunately all of the Democratic state senators have fled to Illinois so nothing can be done until they get back.  This leaves the Governor and the Republican senators to attempt to make a short term solution to a long term problem.  No one knows how long this will take and with thousands of protesters flooding the state capitol in Madison, Wisconsin, we hope it happens quickly....for their own sake.

Till next time...

Introduction

Hi everyone, welcome to my current events blog!

My name is Kali Stitt.  I'm currently a 16 year old Junior living in Atlanta, Ga.  I've always had a passion for politics nationally and internationally which has sparked my internship with several PACs last summer. My interest in politics has also influenced me to have a minor in Political Science when I attend college.  On this blog I'll be discussing some of the pressing issues within American politics today, trying to understand both sides of the story while giving my opinion on the situation.  I hope you guys love the blog and it fuels your passion for politics like it does mine!
